High school kids: Times to start working on Legion oratories
All Schoharie County high school and homeschooled students, ninth to twelfth grade, are invited to the Schoharie County American Legion, Legion Riders and Ladies Auxiliary Posts to participate in this year's Schoharie County American Legion Oratorical Contest.
The contest will be held at the Cobleskill-Richmondville Central School auditorium on Saturday, December 3 at 1:30pm (snow date December 10 at 1:30pm).
Schoharie County Oratorical chairman is Frank Masterson, Jr.
The prepared oration must be about some phase of the Constitution of the United States and be of the contestant's choice, emphasizing the duties and obligations of a citizen to the government by way of the United States Constitution.
The prepared oration must be an original effort of each contestant and must be 8-10 minutes in length. The prepared oration is the only requirement at the county level of competition. At the District and higher levels of the competition an assigned topic requirement is added.
The awards offered at the Schoharie County competition will be $200 for first, $150 for second, $100 for third and $75 each for fourth, fifth and sixth.
The winner of the county competition will be eligible to compete at the District 3 level.
In recent years, the local effort has been able to send two contestants to the District 3 contest but that will depend on the participation of the other counties in the district.
The awards increase significantly as the levels of competition increase.
Interested students should contact the main office at their high school or their local parent group, for the homeschooled, for more information or contact Mr. Masterson at 234-4709.
