C-R making plans to mark 25 years

7/11/2018
By Jim Poole

The 2018-19 school year is one of anniversaries for Cobleskill-Richmondville. It’s the 50th anniversary of the football team and the 20th anniversary of the high school. But the biggest––and probably the most important––is the 25th anniversary of the Cobleskill and Richmondville districts merging. Plans are still in the making for the merger anniversary, and a committee working on it decided that the observance will be a year-long celebration rather than one event. That the celebration will last all year is appropriate, because the build-up to the merger itself took a year. It was a contentious issue, and many in both districts felt their schools should be distinct from one another. But many more––in a straw vote and a formal vote, both in 1993––believed that a merged, larger district would offer more for students. That’s turned out to be true, according to Bruce Tryon, C-R school board president. “We’ve given our students many more opportunities to succeed,” Mr. Tryon said. “This has been one of the most successful mergers which has year in and year out provided the best educational opportunities for students at C-RCS.” The committee is looking for individuals to help with the anniversary and will be involving current students. One item already decided is that C-R will change its logo to note the 25th anniversary. There will also be a communication campaign featuring faculty and alumni profiles, in the Times-Journal, on social media and on C-R’s website. Anyone who wants to help with the anniversary celebration should contact Mr. Tryon at tryonb@crcsd.org.
