 DETAILS
College events to mark MLK Day Monday

1/16/2019

SUNY Cobleskill invites the public to campus for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. National Day of Service, at the College January 21 from 1-9pm. Service-themed initiatives and activities highlight the day, aimed at giving back and honoring Dr. King and his vision, mission and spirit. Keynote speaker Jodi Merriday will present “Speak Truth to Power: Trending Topics in Diversity” at 4pm in Bouck Auditorium. An acclaimed speaker with more than 25 years of higher education experience, Dr. Merriday’s lecture introduces training that cultivates social intelligence and inclusivity, while facilitating open dialogue and equipping attendees with skills to become social justice ambassadors. Following evening activities including a trivia challenge and photobooth, a screening of the award-winning film “Selma” begins at 7pm. Student Ericka Caesar will perform spoken word prior to the movie, also in Bouck Auditorium. Service activities beginning at 1pm include open dialogues, art-making, a cleanup of the Richmondville food pantry, and food and personal care drives. Guests will have the opportunity to build alphabet books for area preschoolers, quilts for Albany Medical Center, and cards to support an international initiative combating prejudicial behaviors towards members of the LGBTQ+ community. A full event listing is online at https://www.cobleskill.edu/campus-life/mlk/#activities. “We intend for this day of service to not only become an annual event, but also spark an ongoing and fortified commitment to service at the College and in our area communities,” said SUNY Cobleskill president Marion Terenzio. “We are thankful for the support of our partners as well as those organizing this opportunity to give back.” Registration for individual events, online at https://www.cobleskill.edu/campus-life/mlk/#register. Food pantry donations are ongoing; guests may make food or monetary contributions on the website, as well as onsite at the MLK Day of Service. Check-in for MLK Day of Service begins at 12:30pm in Bouck Atrium, and event parking is free.
